The Indianapolis tennis community is mourning the passing of Barbara Wynne, a local pioneer who died on July 18. Wynne was instrumental in expanding youth access to the sport, having founded the North Side Tennis Club in 1964 and later helping establish the local National Junior Tennis League chapter in 1973.
Her legacy remains visible at the 30-court facility that bears her name, where she ensured that children from all backgrounds could develop both their athletic and personal skills. Her daughter, Mary Cox, noted that her mother specifically requested her memorial services be held at the tennis center where she dedicated so much of her life.
Former student Gary Davis, who received a scholarship from Wynne in 1970, recalled her infectious spirit and commitment to inclusivity as she transported young players to regional competitions. The facility continues to serve as a hub for local athletes, including those preparing for the upcoming IHSAA boys state championship.
