How a T20I vs India is accelerating Japan’s cricketing ambitions

Japan is preparing to host a historic T20 international against the world champion Indian team for the Suzuki Cup. Venue preparations at Sano International Cricket Ground involved installing ticket gates, temporary seating, and VIP areas.

Japan Cricket Association Chief Operating Officer Alan Curr noted the profound excitement among the squad regarding this rare fixture. Over the past twelve years, the nation has seen registered players rise from 3,000 to 8,800, while the Japan Cup has grown to feature more than 80 participating teams.

Despite this grassroots expansion, the traditional school system presents an ongoing barrier to mainstream adoption, with only a limited number of institutions currently featuring the sport.
