GLENDALE, Ariz. — Cavan Sullivan made history as the United States defeated Mexico 3–0 in a heated international friendly at State Farm Stadium.
The 17-year-old Philadelphia Union forward became the youngest goalscorer in USMNT history, scoring in the 62nd minute with an audacious chip over Mexico goalkeeper José Rangel after intercepting a poor pass.
Sullivan, aged just 17 years and five days, broke a record that had stood for only four days. Mathis Albert had previously become the youngest USMNT scorer at 17 years and 131 days.
Teenager Julian Hall opened the scoring in the 28th minute, while Malik Tillman added the third goal in the 84th as Mauricio Pochettino's side secured its third consecutive victory.
Mexico were reduced to 10 men after Mateo Chávez was sent off in the second half, and the U.S. held on for a convincing clean sheet.
For Sullivan, the night marked another huge step in his rapid rise. His historic goal against one of America's biggest rivals has made him one of the most exciting young names in American soccer.
