Hants relegated as Leics keep survival hopes alive

Leicestershire sealed a five-wicket County Championship Division One victory over Hampshire at Uptonsteel Grace Road, confirming Hampshire's relegation to Division Two for the first time since their 2014 promotion. Resuming the fourth day chasing a target of 334, the hosts reached 335 for five shortly after 2:00 PM BST, losing only two wickets during the morning session.

New Zealand batter Nick Kelly scored 86 and wicketkeeper Ben Cox added an unbeaten 75 in a vital 158-run stand for the fifth wicket, building upon captain Ian Holland's nine wickets across the match. Earlier, Hampshire had posted totals of 214 and 363, anchored by Nick Gubbins's second-innings 133, while Ajit Patel claimed 4-103 and Kyle Abbott later took his 62nd wicket of the season by removing Hamza Shaikh.

The 19-point triumph keeps Leicestershire's slim hopes of top-flight survival alive, though they remain heavily burdened by a recent 27-point deduction for a poor pitch against Glamorgan. To evade relegation themselves, they must defeat Warwickshire at Edgbaston next week and make up a 20-point deficit on Essex, who play away at Glamorgan.
