Hampshire relegated as Leicestershire keep survival hopes alive

Hampshire's decade-long stint in County Championship Division One has come to an end following a five-wicket loss to Leicestershire at Uptonsteel Grace Road. Chasing a target of 334 on the final day, the hosts reached 335 for five shortly after 14:00 BST, losing just two wickets in the process.

Nick Kelly struck 86 and Ben Cox added an unbeaten 75 in a vital 158-run stand for the fifth wicket, building upon an outstanding match haul of nine wickets from captain Ian Holland. Earlier in the encounter, Nick Gubbins had scored 133 in Hampshire's second-innings total of 363 to counter Ajit Patel's 4-103, but the visitors were ultimately unable to protect their lead.

Despite the victory earning Leicestershire 19 points to Hampshire's three, the Foxes face an extraordinarily narrow path to avoiding the drop themselves after being docked 27 points for an unsatisfactory surface used against Glamorgan. To engineer an improbable escape, Leicestershire must defeat prospective champions Warwickshire at Edgbaston in their finale while simultaneously outscoring Essex by at least 20 points.
