
Masters competitors took center stage during an energetic slate of road competitions, highlighted by the AJ Bell Great North Run route from Newcastle to South Shields. Top veterans included M40 champion R McLeod (66:53) ahead of C Avery and A Swinburn, M45 victor A Davies (67:55), and women's W40 winner C Cain (78:28) followed by F Ross and L Skinner.
Other age-category triumphs were posted by C Berry (M50), P Jones (M55), J Herrera (M60), K Byrne (M65), C Hall (M70), A Dixon (W45), N Kemp (W50), J Stanfield (W55), J Murdy (W60), and J Carnaffin (W65), alongside Rodrigue Kwizera's elite victory and Brigid Kosgei's aggressive performance in the senior ranks. Festivities had commenced earlier at the Great North 5km, where Sam Charlton led all finishers in 15:02 ahead of D Watson and M Watson, while Sophie Harris paced the women in 17:17 over E Holt and A Sillence, complemented by D Dodd's M55 and U Donaghy's W70 division triumphs.
Notable national milestones and half-marathon results were also established throughout the country. Katy Wood reclaimed the women's title at the Vale of York in 72:27, Treena Johnson surpassed Claudine Bensted's previous British W65 standard by clocking 88:08, and 82-year-old Peter Giles reduced his own British M80 5km standard down to 22:28 in Battersea Park.
Elsewhere, M Everett (70:03) and F Bailey (87:37) secured victories at the Amazing Northampton Half-Marathon, J Carr (70:29) and P Barker (79:33) captured the Basildon races, S Griffiths (69:41) and E Fell (79:55) led the Burnham-on-Sea field, and G Stewart (68:08) alongside female winner R Wiseman (75:41) claimed top honors at the Cheshire Autumn Half-Marathon.
