Mercedes driver George Russell has confirmed he will take another Formula 1 grid penalty at the Las Vegas Grand Prix in late November, delaying the introduction of the team’s upgraded power unit. The decision comes after Russell was forced to start from the back of the grid in Singapore due to exceeding his engine allocation following a season-ending power unit failure in Bahrain.
With only six races remaining, Russell—currently 102 points behind teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli—has shifted focus to helping Mercedes refine its new upgrade package, which debuted in Malaysia and has struggled to match Red Bull’s recent dominance. The Briton’s latest penalty will avoid back-to-back grid drops, as the team had previously considered deploying the new engine in the United States Grand Prix.
Russell’s reliability issues have further complicated his season, with his championship hopes now effectively over as Antonelli eyes a maiden title.
