Following India's T20I series triumph against Afghanistan, head coach Gautam Gambhir addressed the status of Hardik Pandya, explaining that the all-rounder remains unable to bowl a complete ten-over spell in ODIs. Sidelined from national duties since the 2026 IPL due to recurring physical setbacks, Pandya last featured internationally during the Men's T20 World Cup final victory over New Zealand.
Although selected for India A's forthcoming 50-over matches against Australia A pending medical clearance, the Mumbai Indians skipper was omitted from the squad set to face the West Indies starting September 27, as team brass wants him to build up his physical workload through competitive cricket rather than rushing him back into international fixtures.
In Pandya's absence, India has turned to Nitish Kumar Reddy, who was recently pulled from the Asian Games setup to take part in the upcoming ODI campaign against the West Indies. Gambhir stressed the strategic value of seam-bowling all-rounders for the side's long-term targets, including an impending tour of South Africa and the ODI World Cup preparations.
The head coach also indicated that once Pandya regains full fitness and rejoins the national limited-overs teams, India would consider fielding both Reddy and Pandya alongside each other in the starting lineup.
