The New York Mets organization has lost a respected figure in Guy Conti, who passed away at 84 after battling a long illness. Conti’s baseball career spanned decades, beginning with a stint as a coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he worked closely with Hall of Famer Sandy Koufax.
His relationship with Koufax later extended to the Mets, as Koufax frequently returned to the team as a guest instructor during spring training while Conti served as bullpen coach from 2005 to 2008, including the team’s standout 2006 season under manager Willie Randolph. Conti also played a key role in mentoring another future Hall of Famer, Pedro Martinez, during his time with the Dodgers, and the two reunited when Martinez signed with the Mets years later.
Beyond his coaching duties, Conti later contributed to the organization as a minor league adviser and spring training coordinator, leaving a lasting impact on the franchise.
