Formula 1’s stewards have introduced stricter guidelines ahead of the 2026 Mexico Grand Prix to address persistent chaos at the opening corners, following a controversial start in last year’s race. During the 2025 edition, Charles Leclerc and George Russell both cut Turn 1 on the opening lap without penalty, despite typically earning sanctions for such moves.
To prevent a repeat, stewards have redefined the rules for Turns 1–6, treating all drivers as both attacking and defending in these zones. Cars leaving the track in these areas will now be penalized if they retain a gained position unless they yield by Turn 4 (for Turns 1–3) or Turn 12 (for Turns 4–6).
Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton will start from pole position for the 2026 race, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli—who can clinch the title—will begin from fourth on the grid.
