Former Scotland rugby captain Jamie Ritchie is poised to make his long-awaited debut for Glasgow Warriors this weekend after recovering from a season-ending ankle and Achilles injury. The 30-year-old flanker, who earned 63 caps for Scotland and spent over a decade as a cornerstone of Edinburgh’s squad, joined the club from French Top 14 side Perpignan in the summer but was sidelined until now.
Warriors assistant coach Nigel Carolan confirmed Ritchie has fully returned to training and is ready to contribute, either as a starter or off the bench, in Saturday’s United Rugby Championship clash against Benetton in Treviso. The timing aligns with the team’s push for the Nations Cup, where Scotland will compete in a few weeks, adding urgency to Ritchie’s return after a carefully managed rehabilitation period following surgery over the summer.
With Warriors sitting second in the URC table, the addition of Ritchie—alongside fellow summer signing Ruwald van der Merwe—marks a key step in head coach Franco Smith’s squad evolution, as the team looks to build on last season’s top-tier finish despite an early playoff exit.
