Belgrade will stage the second European Running Championships over the weekend of April 17-18, 2027, anticipating a field exceeding 25,000 competitors across the scheduled events. Jointly managed by the Serbian Athletics Federation and the Belgrade Marathon, the biennial gathering lets amateur runners share the route simultaneously with elite medal contenders.
The itinerary begins on Saturday with the 10km at 9am and the half marathon at 6pm—which includes a four-person relay alternative—prior to Sunday's 8am marathon. Beginning and concluding at Republic Square, the urban circuit traverses Kalemegdan Park, Sava Square, the Sava riverbank, and the Nikola Tesla Museum, serving as both the 40th anniversary milestone for the Belgrade Marathon and a prelude to EXPO 2027.
The venue previously staged the continental indoors in 2017, the global indoors in 2022, and both European and World Cross Country Championships in 2013 and 2024 respectively.
First established in 2025 across Brussels and Leuven, the standalone road competition had attracted 323 international competitors representing 45 countries alongside amateur fields. That inaugural meet witnessed French triumphs in the marathon team category alongside individual golds for Yann Schrub in the 10km and Jimmy Gressier in the half marathon, which he secured by an 83-second margin.
Italy also starred in Belgium, as Iliass Aouani posted a 2:09:05 marathon victory over two Israeli challengers, while Olympic 10,000m silver medallist Nadia Battocletti captured the women's 10km title. For the upcoming 2027 program, an updated Country Ranking system allows every non-elite entrant to contribute points toward their national tally.
