Controversy surrounded the New York Liberty’s Game 2 playoff loss to the Atlanta Dream after star forward Breanna Stewart questioned officials about an unused reset timeout in the final moments of overtime. ESPN footage revealed Stewart asking referee Kevin Fahy whether her team still had a reset timeout available with 4.3 seconds left, as New York trailed by three points.
Though the Liberty had one reset timeout remaining, Stewart claimed she was told they did not, leading to a missed desperation heave attempt from halfcourt in the 101–98 defeat. Lead official Fatou Cissoko-Stephens later contradicted Stewart’s account, stating in a postgame report that the timeout was confirmed available but never communicated directly to the coaching staff.
The Liberty have since filed an inquiry with the league, which is reviewing the incident amid confusion from both benches and conflicting statements from officials and coaches.
