During Oregon's forty-one to twenty-seven victory over USC on Saturday, Ducks quarterback Dante Moore scrambled before sliding, which led to a fierce collision with Trojans linebacker Desman Stephens II. Stephens made helmet-and-shoulder contact and was consequently ejected and handed a one-game suspension, while Moore was carted off and diagnosed with a concussion at a hospital.
Oregon coach Dan Lanning and several teammates vehemently criticized the hit, but analyst Kirk Herbstreit defended the defender on a podcast. Herbstreit argued that the high-speed tackle was entirely unavoidable because defenders cannot instantly halt their momentum when a dual-threat quarterback suddenly drops into a slide.
