Victor Vercouillie secured his first professional cycling victory on stage 4 of the Eneco Tour, dominating the final ascent of the Col du VAM in a solo breakaway. The 23-year-old, riding for Flanders-Baloise, launched a decisive attack on the last kilometer, crossing the line ahead of Ceriel Desal (Soudal-QuickStep Devo) and Tars Poelvoorde (Lotto-Groupe Wanty), who finished second and third respectively.
Vercouillie’s triumph was deeply personal, as he dedicated the win to his father, who passed away earlier this year, calling him the only thought in his mind during the final lap. The five-rider breakaway, which included two Dutch cyclists, Rick Ottema and Julian Vergouw, held off the peloton by just over a minute before Vercouillie’s late surge sealed the stage win with a two-second margin over his pursuers.
The general classification remained unchanged, with Victor Campenaerts (Visma-Lease a Bike) maintaining a 17-second lead over Wessel Mouris (Unibet Rose Rockets) heading into the final day of racing on Sunday.
