The Oakland Athletics continue their search for a new general manager, with four new names emerging as serious contenders just over a week into the offseason. Among them is Sam Fuld, a former Athletics outfielder who spent two seasons in Oakland from 2014 to 2015 before transitioning into the Phillies’ front office, where he served as a key figure under President Dave Dombrowski.
Though he held a secondary role as general manager in Philadelphia, the Athletics job would mark his first opportunity to lead a team independently. Fuld’s name has circulated in previous GM discussions, but this could be his chance to secure a top executive position after years in baseball’s front offices.
Also in the mix are Jared Banner, the Cubs’ assistant GM who has been instrumental in player development and scouting, including his role in acquiring center fielder Pete Crow-Armstrong. Rob Cerfolio, St.
Louis’ assistant GM, has already interviewed for the position, bringing a decade of experience in Cleveland’s front office before joining the Cardinals in 2024. Rounding out the list is Matt Klein, the Brewers’ assistant GM, who has steadily climbed the ranks since joining the organization in 2007.
Each candidate brings a distinct background, adding depth to Oakland’s evolving search for its next baseball operations leader.
