Following a whirlwind seven days that included being waived, reporting to the American Hockey League, purchasing a new apartment in Hartford, and receiving a swift recall due to an injury, Dylan Garand capped off the craziest week he has ever experienced by earning his first career National Hockey League shutout. The twenty-four-year-old goaltender stopped twenty-two shots on Friday night to propel the New York Rangers to a two-zero victory over the Detroit Red Wings.
Garand originally entered training camp fighting for the backup role behind Igor Shesterkin after Jonathan Quick retired, but the organization instead opted to acquire Joonas Korpisalo and send Garand down. Korpisalo subsequently landed on injured reserve with a lower-body ailment, clearing the path for Garand to seize his moment and join an elite group as only the eighth rookie netminder in franchise history to record a shutout within his first four appearances.
