The Atlanta Dream secured their first-ever WNBA Finals victory on Monday night, defeating the Golden State Valkyries 79-65 at Chase Center to tie the best-of-seven series at 1-1. This win ended a 16-year drought and snapped a 0-10 record in championship games, which included previous losses to the Seattle Storm and Minnesota Lynx.
Angel Reese led the charge with a dominant 30 points and 16 rebounds, a significant improvement over her Game 1 performance where she was limited to 14 points. Allisha Gray contributed 18 points, while Jordin Canada recorded a triple-double with 13 points, seven rebounds, and 10 assists.
Atlanta's offensive surge in the third quarter, highlighted by a 15-2 run, proved decisive against a Golden State team that struggled offensively, with Gabby Williams shooting just 3-for-15.
The series now shifts to State Farm Arena, where the Dream will host Game 3 on October 21 and Game 4 on October 24. Atlanta entered the postseason as the fourth seed after eliminating the Washington Mystics and New York Liberty, and currently holds a 6-1 record in the playoffs.
The Valkyries, in their second season as a franchise, have never won a championship, ensuring that this series will crown a first-time title holder regardless of the outcome.
