The DP World India Championship took an unexpected turn Friday as darkness forced an early suspension of play, leaving half the field still to complete their second round. Patrick Reed, leading the Race to Dubai standings, finished his round at 3-under 69 and was tied for level par, eight shots behind the leaders Angel Hidalgo, Adrian Meronk, and Joost Luiten.
Reed’s position in the tournament hinged on the progress of rivals Eugenio Chacarra and Rory McIlroy, both of whom were playing strongly before the round was halted. Chacarra, who started with a 67, added birdies on holes 1 and 3 to sit at 7 under, while McIlroy was 4 under after four holes, including an eagle on the first.
Play will resume Saturday at 6:45 a.m. local time, with the third round set to begin shortly after.
The tournament had already faced delays Thursday due to lightning, pushing more than half the field into Friday’s schedule. Daniel Hillier shot a 64, the lowest round of the day, and was tied for eighth place, two shots behind the leaders.
The suspension came just before 6 p.m., leaving many players mid-round and adding an extra layer of tension ahead of the final day of qualifying.
