Despite early skepticism, four Arizona Diamondbacks prospects are showing flashes of promise that shouldn’t be dismissed outright. Among them, Jansel Luis, a 21-year-old switch-hitting infielder, faced his toughest challenge yet in Double-A this season.
Though his overall line—270 batting average, 315 OBP, and 16 home runs in 109 games—was unremarkable by traditional metrics, his split against left-handed pitching tells a more nuanced story. As a left-handed batter, he posted an .813 OPS, while his right-handed swing struggled to a .610 mark.
Still, Luis demonstrated rare power in a single at-bat, launching a grand slam off a lefty, and his 26 stolen bases in 30 attempts hint at speed and aggression that could translate at higher levels. The jump from High-A to Double-A is notoriously difficult, and Luis’s production—while below average by wRC+ and wOBA—doesn’t necessarily signal a dead end, especially for a player still refining his approach against elite pitching.
