Sri Lanka’s Test captain Dhananjaya de Silva has announced his immediate resignation from the leadership role, ending a two-and-a-half-year tenure that began in January 2024 after Dimuth Karunaratne stepped down. De Silva, who will remain available as a player, led the team in 18 Tests, securing seven victories, three draws, and eight losses—a win rate of 38.88%.
His captaincy included standout performances, such as twin centuries in Sri Lanka’s 328-run win over Bangladesh in March 2024, though his final series as captain, against India in August 2026, ended in defeat after a 1-0 series loss in Galle. De Silva cited a desire to pass the mantle to younger players, stating the team should embrace a new generation of leadership while he continues contributing with bat and ball.
Sri Lanka Cricket has not yet named a successor, leaving selectors to identify a replacement ahead of the 2025-27 World Test Championship cycle.
