Contract discussions between the Detroit Lions and pass-catcher Sam LaPorta have paused after four weeks of attempts failed to produce an agreement. Discussions continued through the weekend, but both sides ultimately agreed to table negotiations until the offseason so the player could concentrate fully on on-field competition.
General Manager Brad Holmes previously secured extensions for draft classmates Jahmyr Gibbs and Jack Campbell, though negotiations for LaPorta and teammate Brian Branch have taken longer following their recovery from previous season-ending injuries. Other young tight ends around the league have secured major paydays recently, including Tucker Kraft with a four-year, $75 million pact, Michael Mayer on a three-year, $45 million agreement, and Kyle Pitts via a three-year, $54 million extension.
If an agreement is not reached before he hits the market as an unrestricted free agent in 2027, the franchise retains the option to apply a tag projected at approximately $17.5 million for one year.
