During an AFC North showdown in Week 8 between the Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers, both entering with 5-2 records, Cleveland took the opening possession. On a third down play, starting quarterback Deshaun Watson absorbed a late, helmet-to-helmet blow following an incomplete pass intended for rookie receiver KC Concepcion, which drew a roughing the passer infraction.
Although the drive continued, medical protocol forced Watson to the sidelines for a mandatory evaluation, allowing backup quarterback Shedeur Sanders to step in for a brief four-play stint.
Sanders faced immediate struggles as the Browns offense suffered multiple penalties and tight end Harold Fannin Jr. lost a fumble, turning possession over to the Steelers at the 42-yard line.
Watson quickly cleared concussion checks and stood ready on the sideline with his helmet, returning for Cleveland's subsequent offensive series after missing only a quartet of plays. However, his return proved rocky when he coughed up a fumble himself on the second snap of that ensuing drive.
