Deepak Punia secured a third-place finish in the 97kg freestyle division at the Asian Games held in Aichi-Nagoya, defeating Gankhuyag Ganbaatar of Mongolia by a close margin of 2-1. Having built a two-point cushion in the initial period, Punia successfully weathered a late point from his opponent to seal his second career medal at the games, following a silver performance previously.
On the same day, teammate Aman Sehrawat captured the gold medal in the 57kg category after overcoming DPR Korea's Han Chong Song in an 11-7 final battle, marked by a dramatic four-point reversal and an unsuccessful challenge that added a bonus point. Sujeet Kalkal had also previously contributed to the country's freestyle wrestling medal tally by securing a gold in the 65kg weight class.
