During a late September football contest in Los Angeles between the Oregon Ducks and the Southern California Trojans, quarterback Dante Moore suffered a severe head injury in the second quarter. While attempting to slide after a scramble, Moore absorbed a forearm strike to the head from linebacker Desman Stephens II, resulting in immediate unconsciousness and a subsequent trip to the hospital via ambulance.
Stephens was penalized for targeting and ejected, sparking an on-field altercation as several Oregon teammates expressed beliefs that the blow was intentional.
Oregon head coach Dan Lanning firmly labeled the collision unacceptable and criticized the nature of the hit, though he praised his roster for avoiding retaliation during the heated moment. Teammates Dakorien Moore and Dierre Hill Jr.
voiced strong condemnation regarding the opposing defender's actions, while linebacker Teitum Tuioti emphasized that retaliation against opposing quarterback Jayden Maiava was never considered. Following the incident, opposing coach Lincoln Riley met with Lanning to check on the injured quarterback, who was later reported to have movement as he recovers.
