Arizona dropped a Saturday matchup to San Diego, halting a six-game winning streak and forcing the postseason battle into the final game of the regular schedule. Philadelphia also fell in its previous contest, meaning the Diamondbacks did not lose any ground in the standings despite the defeat.
To secure the last Wild Card berth, Arizona must claim a victory in the final game and simultaneously receive a loss from Philadelphia. Zack Wheeler is scheduled to pitch for Philadelphia against the same opponent, while Michael Soroka will start on the mound for Arizona.
Because the Padres already secured the top Wild Card seed, they plan to deploy a bullpen game and rest many regular players. Even with Eduardo Rodriguez eyed for a potential opening postseason matchup, manager Torey Lovullo intends to utilize all available pitching options if necessary.
