The San Francisco 49ers added Dante Pettis to their practice squad following a Tuesday tryout featuring nine candidates, aiming to shore up depth amid a string of injuries to Ricky Pearsall, De'Zhaun Stribling, Demarcus Robinson, Christian Kirk, and Mike Evans. San Francisco has previously turned to Khadarel Hodge and Brandin Cooks to manage their active roster and practice squad requirements while maintaining a 3-0 record.
Pettis previously played eight games for the New Orleans Saints during the 2025 season, securing nine receptions for 127 yards before joining his new squad.
Beyond short-term depth signings, analysts are pointing toward Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. as a potential trade target for the 49ers.
Selected in the opening round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Thomas earned Pro Bowl honors as a rookie by hauling in 87 passes for 1,282 yards and 10 scores, though his production slipped in 2025 and has remained limited through three games with just seven catches for 88 yards. Given his diminishing snap counts and Jacksonville's prior openness to offers, the cost-controlled young target could present an appealing solution for San Francisco's ongoing needs at the position.
