Northwestern football could ride a wave of good fortune into its Big Ten showdown with Michigan State after the Spartans revealed a cascade of injuries that threaten to reshape their defense. Michigan State’s secondary will be decimated by the absence of four starting cornerbacks—Tre Bell, Charles Brantley, Keshawn Williams, and Tyran Chappell—while the unit also loses key linebackers Jordan Hall, Brady Pretzlaff, and Caleb Wheatland.
The offensive line will be further weakened by the season-ending injury to running back Cam Edwards, a critical dual-threat weapon, and the absence of starting left tackle Ben Murawski and fullback Jay Coyne. With Northwestern’s offense already thriving under Chip Kelly’s system, the Wildcats enter the game on a 4-1 record and a momentum high after a commanding 45-14 win over Ball State.
Quarterback Aidan Chiles has emerged as a dual-threat force, tallying 1,172 passing yards and nine touchdowns without an interception while adding six rushing scores, and the depleted Spartan defense could struggle to contain his development. The Wildcats’ receiving corps, led by Griffin Wilde, who posted eight catches for 144 yards and a touchdown in the Ball State win, will have ample opportunities against a secondary forced to rely on less-experienced players.
Meanwhile, Northwestern’s rushing attack, anchored by running backs Caleb Komolafe and Joseph Himon II, could exploit gaps in Michigan State’s middle defense, where the absence of three starters leaves significant vulnerabilities.
