Mike Ditka, the legendary NFL player and coach, has passed away at the age of 86, according to a statement from his family. Known as the driving force behind the Chicago Bears' only Super Bowl victory in 1985, Ditka’s leadership propelled the team to a historic triumph over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XX.
Beyond his coaching success, Ditka enjoyed a Hall of Fame playing career, winning Super Bowls as both a player and assistant coach with the Dallas Cowboys, a rare achievement shared only with Tom Flores. Born Michael Dyczko in Pennsylvania in 1939, Ditka earned the nickname 'Iron Mike' during his high school football days in Aliquippa, a moniker that followed him throughout his storied career.
His journey included stints with the Bears, Eagles, and Cowboys, where he contributed to multiple championship victories and left an indelible mark on the sport. In later years, Ditka founded the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund, supporting former players in need, reflecting his enduring commitment to the game beyond the field.
