Former professional basketball player J.R. Smith was taken into custody by authorities in Hunt County, Texas, on Tuesday following allegations of domestic violence.
Law enforcement officials booked the retired athlete on an assault charge involving bodily injury to a family member, and no financial guarantee for release had been established as of the initial reporting.
Throughout his athletic career spanning sixteen years, the forty-one-year-old competitor earned a Sixth Man of the Year accolade in 2013 and secured two league titles, first with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 and later with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020. Following his retirement from professional sports, he pursued higher education and obtained a university degree in May of 2026.
