Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz captured his third title of the season at the Japan Open, defeating world No. 16 Jiri Lehecka 7‑6 (4), 6‑4 to claim his 10th ATP crown and move past Andy Murray’s nine titles.
The win marked his 27th career triumph, his first since returning from a five‑month right‑wrist injury, and made him the first man this century to successfully defend the Tokyo tournament, a feat not achieved since Pete Sampras in 1993‑94.
Alcaraz will head to his third Shanghai appearance with a first‑round bye, set to meet the winner of Juan Manuel Cerúndolo and Nicolas Mejía on Oct. 9.
A potential round‑of‑16 opponent could be Tommy Paul or Valentin Vacherot, and a quarterfinal run would pit him against players such as Felix Auger‑Aliassime, Arthur Fils, Daniil Medvedev or Taylor Fritz, while avoiding world No. 1 Alexander Zverev, Novak Djokovic and Ben Shelton, who are on the opposite side of the draw.
