BYU dropped its first game as the No. 2 ranked team in the nation, falling to UCF in a contest that featured a chaotic conclusion to regulation.
The two squads were locked in a 24-24 tie for much of the fourth quarter, with the Knights failing to convert a fourth-down attempt at the goal line before regaining possession with 42 seconds remaining.
The final sequence of the half was defined by a blocked field goal attempt by UCF kicker Will Stone, who recovered the ball to retain possession for a subsequent fourth down. Although a potential facemask penalty on a BYU defender was initially flagged, officials declined to enforce it, leaving the ball where Stone went down.
The clock ultimately expired during the play because Stone’s helmet came off, triggering a mandatory 10-second runoff that UCF could not stop due to having no timeouts remaining, sending the tied game to overtime.
