The NFL’s planned regular-season game between the New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers in Paris has drawn concern from former quarterback Boomer Esiason, who suggested on WFAN that the event could inadvertently escalate unrest in a city already gripped by widespread protests. France has seen escalating demonstrations over education reforms, leading to riots, over 2,000 arrests, and a police-imposed curfew from 11 p.m.
Monday to 6 a.m. Tuesday.
Despite the chaos—including damage to 1,500 shops—the NFL has refused to cancel or relocate the game at Stade de France, insisting preparations remain on track with close coordination from local authorities. Esiason questioned whether the high-profile match could amplify tensions, noting the French government’s apparent struggle to contain the unrest, which he described as among the worst in recent memory.
The league has yet to address broader player concerns, including those of Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has not publicly commented on playing amid the turmoil. Meanwhile, the Saints arrive in Paris on Monday, with the Steelers following later in the week, as the NFL maintains its schedule despite the unfolding crisis.
