Former international wicketkeeper-batsman BJ Watling is set to take over as the new batting coach for the New Zealand national cricket team. He will officially assume his duties following the conclusion of the upcoming two-match Test series against India next month, stepping in to replace outgoing coach Luke Ronchi.
During his playing career from 2009 to 2021, Watling appeared in 75 Test matches, accumulating 3790 runs at an average of 37.52, alongside 28 One Day Internationals and five Twenty20 Internationals. Both Test captain Tom Latham and high performance chief Daryl Gibson expressed strong support for the appointment, highlighting his dedication, leadership background with domestic sides like Wellington and Northern Districts, and strong existing ties to members of the current squad.
