Bill Belichick learned the hard way: 'The Patriot Way' doesn't work in college football

Steve Belichick has stepped down from his role as the defensive coordinator for the University of North Carolina football team. The university confirmed his departure on Thursday, September 17, stating that his exit will formally take effect on October 27 once an ongoing medical leave wraps up.

The younger Belichick had previously stepped away on medical leave at the beginning of preseason camp in early August.

The announcement coincides with the completion of an internal university inquiry into the Tar Heels football operation, which involved an investigation concerning drugs. Despite North Carolina starting the year with a 2-0 record on the field, the departure removes another key staff member and intensifies the scrutiny surrounding head coach Bill Belichick during his second campaign leading the collegiate program.
