Bears beat Essex to go top of Division One

Warwickshire surged to the summit of Division One by wrapping up an eight-wicket victory over Essex within two days at Chelmsford. Having taken a 57-run first-innings edge courtesy of Sam Hain's resilient 88 not out from 57 overs, the visitors bundled Essex out for 189 in their second turn at the crease.

Manav Suthar proved decisive, claiming 5-75 to raise his tally to 26 dismissals across five Championship appearances. Essex, hampered by fitness issues that saw Luc Benkenstein step in for a finger-injured Tom Westley and 17-year-old debutant Jack Auld replace Shane Snater, briefly battled via Paul Walter's 42 and Dean Elgar's 29 in his farewell Chelmsford knock.

Pursuing a modest target of 133, Warwickshire were propelled by Zen Malik's rapid 51, a knock featuring four maximums. Auld managed to remove Rob Yates with just his fourth delivery in professional cricket, but Hain and Dan Mousley steered the visitors home during extra overs to secure 19 points against Essex's three.

The outcome represents Warwickshire's fourth triumph across five matches, leaving them awaiting rival fixtures featuring Somerset and Nottinghamshire to determine who leads the standings entering next week's conclusive round.
