Bears beat Essex to go top of Division One

Warwickshire surged to the summit of County Championship Division One with an eight-wicket victory against Essex at Chelmsford, wrapping up the contest inside two days to claim 19 points to the hosts' three. Resuming day two, Warwickshire secured a 57-run opening advantage as Sam Hain finished unbeaten on 88 after arriving with his team at 12-2, while Essex spinner Matt Critchley claimed 4-54 by taking the final scalp of Olly Hannon-Dalby to end the innings at 191.

Hit by injuries to Tom Westley and Shane Snater, Essex brought in Luc Benkenstein and 17-year-old debutant Jack Auld as replacements. Essex were then bowled out for 189 in their second turn, undone by Indian slow left-armer Manav Suthar, who claimed 5-75 to dismiss key contributors including Dean Elgar for 29 in his farewell Chelmsford knock and top-scorer Paul Walter for 42.

Chasing a target of 133, Warwickshire lost Rob Yates to Auld's fourth professional delivery before Zen Malik struck an aggressive 51 containing four maximums. Dan Mousley joined Hain to complete the chase at 138-2 during the additional overs, securing Warwickshire's fourth win in five outings and leaving them awaiting outcomes from Somerset and Nottinghamshire to see if they hold top spot entering the final round.
