BCCI brings IPL 2027 auction back to India after four years, delays decision on Impact Player rule: Report

Following several cycles hosted internationally in places such as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, the Indian Premier League mini-auction is slated to return to domestic soil for the 2027 edition. This marks the first time the bidding event will take place in an Indian city since Kochi staged it in 2023, though the 2028 mega-auction is expected to travel back overseas.

The IPL Governing Council determined the switch after franchise owners cited significant operational and travel complications involved in transporting their delegations abroad, concerns previously raised during the Abu Dhabi gathering.

Simultaneously, administrators deferred resolving the controversial Impact Player regulation, pushing a definitive ruling to an upcoming council gathering scheduled for later in the month. While most of the ten clubs oppose preserving the substitution system over the long term, they favor retaining it for one more campaign to match current squad constructions before resetting their rosters at the 2028 mega-auction.
