Bath lose at home to Montpellier in Champions Cup

October 17, 2026

Montpellier secured a commanding 32-14 victory over Bath in their opening Champions Cup clash, ending a difficult weekend for English clubs in the competition. Bath, who had scored at least 33 points in each of their first three Premiership games this season, struggled offensively at The Rec, failing to capitalize on key opportunities, including a disallowed try in both halves and a missed chance by Joe Cokanasiga.

Donovan Taofifenua’s two tries and Alex Becognee’s late score gave Montpellier a dominant second-half performance, with the French side scoring 22 unanswered points after halftime. Bath’s early lead of 14-10 was short-lived, as Stuart Hogg’s try and penalties from Adam Hastings set the tone for Montpellier’s eventual win.

The hosts’ remaining pool fixtures include matches against Cardiff, the Bulls, and Stade Français, while Montpellier continues their push for European success after finishing as Top 14 finalists last season.

Bath’s struggles extended beyond the try line, with Finn Russell’s play under scrutiny after a turnover led to Taofifenua’s second try. The hosts’ defensive efforts were tested repeatedly, and their inability to sustain momentum cost them dearly.

Montpellier’s backline, featuring Taofifenua and Becognee, proved too clinical, while Bath’s attack remained frustratingly inconsistent. The result adds to a challenging start for English clubs in Pool Four, with Gloucester’s draw against Bordeaux on Friday and other losses by Sale, Bristol, and Saracens highlighting the competitive nature of the tournament.
