AICHI-NAGOYA, Japan — India enjoyed one of its busiest medal days at the Asian Games 2026 on Monday, September 28, collecting eight medals across athletics, shooting and kurash. Athletics dominated the day's haul with seven podium finishes as India's medal tally climbed to 45.
Murali Sreeshankar opened the athletics medal rush with silver in the men's long jump. The Indian produced a best effort of 8.07 metres despite suffering an injury during his fourth attempt and missing his final two attempts.
Gulveer Singh added another silver in the men's 1500m, giving India another podium finish on the track. The middle-distance runner delivered a strong performance in a highly competitive final to finish second. The Japanese overtook Gulveer in the final lap with strong final kick.
The men's javelin throw produced another double podium for India. Yashvir Singh won silver with a personal best of 85.72m, while Rohit Yadav secured bronze with 84.35m. Sri Lanka's Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage took gold with 88.55m.
India also added two more athletics bronze medals. Vithya Ramraj finished third in the women's 400m hurdles in 54.75 seconds, breaking the 42-year-old Indian national record of 55.42 seconds set by PT Usha in 1984.
Parul Chaudhary followed with bronze in the women's 5000m, clocking 15:14.61 for her second athletics medal of the Games. Seema Kumari, who had won bronze in the women's 10,000m earlier in the Games, finished sixth with a timing of 15:35.06
Shooting contributed another silver through Esha Singh in the women's 25m pistol, while Pincky Balhara won bronze in the women's -78kg kurash event.
Beyond the medal events, India's men's cricket team advanced to the semifinals after its quarter-final against Afghanistan was abandoned because of rain, with India progressing on the basis of its higher seeding. India's men's hockey team also reached the semifinals after defeating Bangladesh 10-0 and will face Pakistan next.
At the end of Day 10, India had accumulated 45 medals — four gold, 20 silver and 21 bronze. Athletics alone accounted for 19 of India's medals at the Games.
With several major events still remaining, India's campaign at Aichi-Nagoya continues to feature strong contributions from athletics, shooting, boxing and team sports.
