As Rohit plays on, what next for Jaiswal?

Despite holding the record for the quickest half-century in Indian Premier League history off 13 deliveries, 24-year-old Yashasvi Jaiswal finds his limited-overs opportunities restricted. In the shortest format, his Rajasthan Royals teammate, 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, has challenged his position after coming within two balls of his benchmark on three occasions.

In 50-over cricket, Jaiswal faces competition from 39-year-old Rohit Sharma for an opening role. While Jaiswal has played all 31 Tests for India since recording a century on debut in July 2023, he has featured in just 23 of 88 T20Is since August 2023 and only six of 23 ODIs since debuting in February 2025.

Even with limited chances, Jaiswal has struck two centuries across his six ODI appearances. Selectors remain interested in integrating him prior to next year's World Cup in South Africa, previously sliding Shubman Gill to third in the order during a June series against Afghanistan.

Rohit's standing has generated debate after he resisted selection pressure following an ODI hundred at Lord's, prompting BCCI involvement. India's roadmap will develop over an upcoming 11-match ODI stretch beginning September 27 against the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram, where Jaiswal is expected to remain firmly in contention either as an opener or primary reserve.
