Alexander Zverev’s doubles partnership with Marcelo Melo suffered another early exit at the Shanghai Masters, falling to Luke Johnson and Sander Arends in the first round. The German star, ranked second in singles but 102nd in doubles, has struggled to maintain consistency this season, posting a 9-11 record in doubles matches.
His lone title came at the Mexican Open in February, where he and Melo won all four rounds, including a final victory over Robert Galloway and Alexander Erler. Beyond that, their results have been uneven, with six first-round losses and just four other wins—including a single match at the Laver Cup with Casper Ruud.
Zverev’s doubles ranking starkly contrasts his singles form, reflecting a season where his doubles play has been far less dominant than his singles dominance, which has kept him atop the ATP rankings.
