Carlos Alcaraz Reveals Real Reason Behind New Moustache Look At Shanghai Masters & Why It Is Here To Stay

October 10, 2026

World No. 3 tennis player Carlos Alcaraz made headlines at the Shanghai Masters not just for his on-court performance, but for his bold new look—a moustache that became the center of a playful bet with his team.

The Spaniard revealed the moustache was a reward for winning the Japan Open title earlier this month, where he defeated Jiří Lehečka in the final at Tokyo’s Ariake Coliseum. Alcaraz had promised his team that if he secured the victory, they would all sport the facial hair for their next tournament, and he followed through with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Juan Manuel Cerundolo in his Shanghai opener.

Beyond the fun bet, Alcaraz also expressed his deep connection to the Shanghai crowd, whom he missed after sitting out last year’s event due to a left ankle injury sustained during the Japan Open. The injury had forced him to withdraw from Shanghai the previous week, but his return was marked by gratitude for the fans’ unwavering support, which he described as a key motivator to return to the court.

His next challenge at the tournament comes in the third round, where he will face Zizou Bergs on Monday, continuing his strong comeback after a four-month hiatus following a wrist injury at the Barcelona Open in April.
