Alexander Zverev reached the semifinals of the Shanghai Masters for the first time in seven years, marking a career-high run in the ATP Tour. The German star defeated Alex de Minaur in straight sets (6-4, 6-4) to advance, securing his first 10,000 ATP points of the season and extending his winning streak over de Minaur to 8-0 in head-to-head matches outside team events.
Zverev, who is on track to claim the year-end world No. 1 ranking, has faced challenges in Shanghai, including a nagging right ankle issue that flared up during his prior matches.
He attributed his ability to play effectively to minimizing physical rallies, noting that prolonged matches exacerbate his injury, particularly on serve. Looking ahead, Zverev will face Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the semifinals, a matchup he leads 6-1 in their ATP Tour history, with the Spaniard’s lone victory coming at the 2023 Canadian Open.
