Philippine tennis star Alexandra Eala has cleared a major hurdle ahead of her next tournament, the Wuhan Open. The World No.
18 had faced potential sanctions from the WTA for skipping the 2026 China Open to compete at the Asian Games, where she won a bronze medal in singles. Eala’s decision to prioritize representing the Philippines at the Games—rather than playing a mandatory WTA event—could have resulted in a $10,000 fine, but the Philippine Tennis Association successfully appealed on her behalf.
The WTA recently adjusted its rules to reduce penalties for players representing their countries, and Eala’s case was reviewed favorably after confirming her choice was voluntary and tied to Olympic qualification efforts. With her ranking currently at 18th, Eala must maintain strong performances to stay within the Top 20 by year’s end, and her upcoming matches in Wuhan will be critical in that pursuit.
