Why Málaga's blunt attack faces an uphill fight against a stubborn Espanyol side

By Pavana · October 9, 2026

Málaga CF enter Friday's encounter at Estadio La Rosaleda in urgent need of an attacking spark. Rooted to 20th place in the Primera División with three points from their first seven games, Juanfran Funes' side are finding the top tier unforgiving.

They share the division low with only three goals scored and have generated just 14 shots on target all season. That lack of incision was evident again in their pre-break 1-0 loss away to Getafe CF on 20 September 2026, where Iván Azón's 85th-minute strike settled matters.

The visitors arrive with their own point to prove. Manolo González's RCD Espanyol de Barcelona sit 15th with seven points after back-to-back league defeats, including a 3-1 home setback against Elche CF on 18 September 2026.

Yet the historical matchup heavily favors the Catalan club as both teams return to competitive action on 9 October 2026.

1. History and discipline lean toward Espanyol

Overcoming Espanyol has proven nearly impossible for Málaga in modern times. The hosts have failed to beat Espanyol in their last 14 competitive meetings, drawing five and losing nine, and have not taken three points from them since 2012.

Espanyol have also won each of the past five head-to-head encounters. Beyond the historical tilt, González's team brings an abrasive edge; Espanyol lead La Liga with 120 fouls committed across their first seven rounds.

2. Sharp differences in frontline firepower

The starkest disparity lies inside the penalty area. Espanyol boast Roberto Fernández, who has hit six league goals through matchday seven to spearhead their offensive output.

In contrast, Málaga have managed only three goals as an entire squad, with Carlos Dotor standing as one of their goalscorers this season, while their 3 points came from draws against Deportivo La Coruña, Levante, and Celta de Vigo.

3. Squad availability shapes both starting lineups

Personnel issues further complicate Funes' plans. Julen Lobete and Aarón Ochoa remain sidelined with long-term injuries, while Jens Cajuste, Diego Murillo, and Moussa Diarra are questionable with fitness issues.

The potential return of forward Juan Cruz, who worked alongside the main group in training sessions this week, provides a rare boost. Espanyol counter with their own availability updates: defender Omar El Hilali is back in the selection pool following a suspension, although Kike García is out until December with an injury and Jofre Carreras is rated doubtful.

What follows next will hinge entirely on whether Málaga can reverse their scoring drought under the lights at La Rosaleda, or if Espanyol's historical grip over this fixture will extend their winning run.
