Ajit Agarkar wants to step down as chief selector, writes to BCCI

Ajit Agarkar has informed the BCCI of his desire to vacate his position as chairman of the senior men's selection panel once his current contract concludes on October 4. Although Agarkar is technically permitted to receive a one-year renewal following his appointment in July 2023, disagreements with the board regarding Rohit Sharma's ongoing participation in 50-over cricket appear to have accelerated his departure, which was further highlighted by his absence from a recent review session.

While certain board members favor retaining him until the 2027 World Cup, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia stated after Friday's Annual General Meeting that an official choice will occur when appropriate, noting that roughly two weeks still remain.

Throughout his tenure, Agarkar guided major leadership transitions, such as elevating Shubman Gill to Test captaincy in place of retired stalwarts Sharma and Virat Kohli, and naming Shreyas Iyer to direct the T20 squad over Yadav after the latter struggled following the 2026 T20 World Cup title. If Agarkar departs, former wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel, with 25 Test appearances, leads the race to succeed him ahead of fellow selector Pragyan Ojha, who featured in 24 Tests, as board bylaws dictate that the panel's most experienced Test cricketer must assume the chairmanship.
