Following a knee injury that sidelines Jaxson Dart for the duration of the regular season, the New York Giants are exploring replacements at quarterback and have narrowed their attention to a group of five candidates. That shortlist features San Francisco signal-caller Mac Jones, alongside Jimmy Garoppolo, Gardner Minshew, J.J.
McCarthy, and Justin Fields. Brandon Allen is additionally under consideration after previously spending training camp with the organization.
Offensive coordinator Matt Nagy previously passed on the opportunity to draft Jones during his time coaching the Bears in 2021, choosing Fields instead, which could influence how the team approaches the position now, particularly in light of Jones's performance during the 2025 campaign. Meanwhile, reporter Mike Garafolo noted that Jameis Winston's current outing against the Titans will help dictate the franchise's upcoming roster decisions.
Winston struggled through the opening two quarters under difficult weather conditions at MetLife Stadium, completing nine of fifteen pass attempts for 77 yards while absorbing a pair of sacks. On the other side, San Francisco executive John Lynch indicated a reluctance to part ways with Jones due to the 49ers' recent organizational reliance on depth under center.
Even though current starter Brock Purdy has performed at an MVP caliber across the first couple of weeks, San Francisco previously leaned heavily on Jones to handle starting duties for half of the prior season.
