Following a difficult loss against the Saints, New York Giants fans are strongly advocating for J.J. McCarthy to take over as starting quarterback.
An online poll of 751 voters showed that 81 percent want McCarthy to replace Jameis Winston this upcoming Sunday when the team plays the Houston Texans. Head coach John Harbaugh declined to make an immediate change in his post-game press conference, noting that it was too soon after the final whistle to address the quarterback situation.
Harbaugh praised Winston's competitive spirit despite an inconsistent performance and stated he has no personal issues with him.
During Sunday's game, Harbaugh brought in McCarthy late in the fourth quarter with the Giants trailing by 24 points to give him snaps running the offense. Although McCarthy's first series ended in an interception, he quickly rebounded after a fumble recovery by Arvell Reese, throwing for 243 yards in less than a quarter and nearly leading a dramatic comeback before falling short with twelve seconds remaining.
The Giants previously acquired McCarthy from the Minnesota Vikings in exchange for a fifth-round draft pick. Harbaugh acknowledged McCarthy performed admirably under desperate circumstances, though he must now weigh whether to insert the young quarterback against Houston or stick with Winston for one more week ahead of the team's bye week.
