Atlanta Dream star Angel Reese has fully embraced a new nickname bestowed upon her by Atlanta Hawks guard CJ McCollum, who dubbed her “the queen of the South” before the WNBA Finals. Reese, a three-time WNBA All-Star and 2026 Defensive Player of the Year, welcomed the moniker during a media session, calling it a “cool” honor while thanking McCollum and the Hawks for their support.
Both players arrived in Atlanta this season through high-profile trades: McCollum joined the Hawks in January after being sent to the Washington Wizards in exchange for Trae Young, while Reese was acquired by the Dream in April from the Chicago Sky in a deal involving two future first-round picks and a 2028 second-round selection. Their immediate impact has been undeniable, with McCollum helping the Hawks return to the postseason after two straight years of missing the playoffs, and Reese leading the Dream to an unblemished playoff record heading into the Finals.
Reese’s transition to the Dream has also included a notable shooting transformation, as head coach Karl Smesko revealed she rebuilt her perimeter game from scratch—starting just two weeks before the season opener. Smesko praised Reese’s dedication, noting their daily practice sessions to refine her shot, which has shown improvement, particularly in the playoffs.
During the Dream’s 3-0 sweep of the New York Liberty in the second round, Reese connected on 4 of 7 three-point attempts, underscoring her growing versatility beyond her defensive prowess.
